Passerelles Brussels
Compact bridge design
Ipv Delft/Artgineering collaborated on this design of the passerelles. We designed a pedestrian bridge with bicycle gutters and lifts for Sint-Agatha-Berchem. A full-fledged bicycle bridge requires long ramps that can hardly be fitted into the location and would also be very visual. The design for the passerelle in Sint-Agatha-Berchem therefore consists of a compact S-shaped construction with transparent elevator shafts on either side. The entire S-shape is one welded together construction, which is completely integrally connected to the concrete foundation. Both bridges have a corten steel load-bearing balustrade. The choice of Corten steel is partly due to the durable and maintenance-free nature of the material.
Structurally, the sculptural design of the passerelles is cleverly constructed: torsionally rigid load-bearing balustrades support the bridge deck and stair steps, the balustrades themselves rest on protruding beams that form one whole with the steelwork of the elevator shafts.

Passerelle Brussels: pedestrian crossing
Commissioned by Infrabel and in collaboration with Artgineering, we created the winning tender design for the passerelles on the L50 railway north of Brussels in 2017. With the striking corten steel bridges, the crossing has become a lot nicer and more comfortable, both at Sint-Agatha-Berchem station and in Ganshoren, slightly further east. The physical connection with very nearby Flanders has also been strengthened and the design also responds to the future expansion of the GEN (Regional Express Network).
compact bridge design
Of the three participating parties, Greisch, Ney+Partners and the combination instead of Delft/Artgineering, the last one is chosen as the winner. Striking, because instead of the requested bicycle and pedestrian bridge, we are designing a pedestrian bridge with bicycle gutters and lifts for Sint-Agatha-Berchem. A daring choice, but also a very logical one. A full-fledged bicycle bridge requires long ramps that can hardly be fitted into the location and would also be very visual.

load-bearing elevator shafts
The connections between elevator shafts and bridge construction are also rigid and made using welded connections. The one-sided cantilever creates an unusual interplay of forces in the shaft construction, with compression and tension columns. This was a challenge for the steel constructor, which was further increased because, for aesthetic reasons, the elevator shafts were designed as a quarter-section construction, i.e. without diagonal wind bracings. This is to maintain optimal transparency and to obtain the most peaceful overall image possible, with the elevator as a ladder. For the same reason, the rainwater drainage from the bridge deck and roof of the lift towers are also integrated into the steel tubes of the lift structure.
